Thoroughbreds drop 4-set battle to William Smith on Senior Day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team hung tough in a four-set defeat (17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 11-25) to William Smith on Saturday afternoon.
  • Before the match, Skidmore honored its two seniors: Ella Kretten and Tiffany Flores.
  • William Smith won the first two sets in near identical fashion before Skidmore extended it with a win in the third. The Herons dominated the fourth to cut off the chance of a comeback.
  • Maya Stolarz led Skidmore with eight kills.
  • Angie Mozrall and Jazlin Chen both had seven. They both also each finished with three blocks.
  • Catriona Hoelperl and Flores combined for 31 assists with 16 and 15, respectively.
  •  Athena Braverman racked up a team high 16 digs. Madison Manning had 11.
  • The two-headed monster of Malya Sayre (18) and Marin Montagne (15) combined for 33 kills to lead the way for the visitors. Sayre finished with a double-double thanks to 12 digs.
  • Skidmore was right in it in both the first and second sets. In the opener, it was 14-14 when WSC got three in a row and a 4-1 run to take command as part of an 11-3 end for the 25-17 score.
  • The Herons pulled ahead slightly sooner in the second set and fought off the Thoroughbreds by closing the game on an 8-2 run.
  • Skidmore (9-13, 2-4 Liberty League) scored four unanswered early in the third set. Later, after William Smith tied it at 11, the Thoroughbreds rolled off five out of six points. The visitors charged back again. It was 21-20 Skidmore when an attack error by the Herons gave the Thoroughbreds a two-point cushion. It was closed to one again before Skidmore got three straight on two Manning kills and another from Stolarz to clinch the set.
  • William Smith (15-3, 5-1 Liberty League) bombed its way to a .382 swing percentage in the fourth for the easy win.
  • The Herons hit .254 as a team for the match. Skidmore finished at .089.
