CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Mason Beecher broke a 3-3 tie with 2:14 remaining in regulation as the nationally 14
th-ranked Skidmore College men's hockey team went on the road and defeated Cortland, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.
- The win is Skidmore's 10th of the season. The Thoroughbreds are 10-3-2 after bouncing back from three losses in a row against top-seven ranked teams. It is the fourth consecutive season that Skidmore has reached the 10-win plateau.
- The Red Dragons, who received votes in the latest USCHO.com Poll, are 10-4-1.
- Beecher found himself in the slot after a Freddie Ilias shot from the point was blocked by a Cortland defenseman in front of the net. He lifted the wrister below the bar for the go-ahead marker and Skidmore held on over the final 134 seconds to preserve the win.
- Ilias led all players with three points on a goal and two assists, including the helper on the game winner. He scored Skidmore's first goal to tie it at one on the power play at 11:44 of the first period and assisted on Nick Cozzi's tying goal with 25 seconds remaining in the second period, also on the power play. Cozzi and Beecher finished with one goal and one assist each.
- Zach Frisk scored Skidmore's other goal, which tied the game at two in the middle of the second period.
- Junior transfer blue liner Owen Gonter had two assists for the Thoroughbreds. Kevin Urquhart and Ryan Waltman each registered one apple.
- The host Red Dragons led on three occasions (1-0, 2-1, 3-2) before Skidmore potted the last two goals for the win.
- Tate Brandon registered 28 saves in his return to the crease for the Thoroughbreds.
- Nate Berke posted a goal and an assist to lead Cortland. Nick Serio had two assists, and Ronan Mobley had 22 saves in the effort for the Red Dragons.
- Skidmore finished 2-for-4 on the power play and killed off Cortland's only power play chance.
- Shots finished 31-26 Cortland, and the Red Dragons edged the Thoroughbreds, 27-21, in the faceoff department.
