#14 Skidmore jumps two spots in league standings with 4-1 win over Johnson & Wales

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team won its second game of the week with a 4-1 triumph over visiting Johnson & Wales University on Friday.
 
  • The win gives Skidmore, ranked 14th nationally, three points and the Thoroughbreds now sit alone in third place of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) with 19 points at 6-2-1. Skidmore is 11-3-2 overall.
  • JWU is 4-10-2 on the year and 1-7-1 in the conference for five points.
  • Senior alternate captain Jacob Franczak and junior captain Jack Strauss both had points in three out of four Skidmore goals to lead the way. Franczak had two goals and an assist. Strauss scored once and had two helpers.
  • Junior defenseman Stephen Perez had a pair of assists, and first-year Cooper Rice accounted for the other Thoroughbred goal.
  • Danny Maguson, Kevin Urquhart, and Jacob Zwirecki all had assists.
  • Senior netminder Tate Brandon had 17 saves to improve to 11-1-2 between the pipes for Skidmore.
  • Skidmore outshot the visiting Wildcats 49-18.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored the first three goals, two in the first and one in the second, to take command. Strauss opened the scoring from Urquhart and Franczak at 6:09. Franczak made it 2-0 at 15:25 of the first from Strauss and Zwirecki.
  • It was 3-0 on Franczak's second at 8:09 of the second period. Strauss and Perez assisted.
  • Chris Alexander scored JWU's only goal, unassisted, to make ot 3-1 51 seconds after the Thoroughbreds scored their third.
  • Skidmore completed the scoring at 6:37 of the third period. Rice scored on a double rebound from Magnuson and Perez.
  • Skidmore finished 1-for-5 on the power play and killed the only power play chance for the visitors.
  • It was the last regular season game between JWU and Skidmore as both members of the NEHC. Johnson & Wales will join the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) as a new full member this summer. The Thoroughbreds won all 10 matchups against the Wildcats since they joined in 2018, by a combined score of 52-15.  
NEXT UP: Skidmore will look to sweep the weekend and season series against UMass Boston Saturday at 4 p.m.
