Soaring Eagles turn away Thoroughbreds 3-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Elmira College prevailed in a battle of 10-team teams 3-1 over Skidmore College in New England Hockey Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. The #10 Thoroughbreds are 9-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 NEHC, while the Soaring Eagles move to 13-2 and 6-2.
 
  • Cooper Rice scored his second goal of the season only 2:29 into the game to put Skidmore in front 1-0. Owen Gonter and Ryan Waltman assisted. Elmira quickly responded with Mitch Haight's second goal of the season at 4:05 from Ryan Reifler and Chance Gorman.
  • It was a scoreless battle over the next 49 minutes with both goalies coming up big to keep it even.
  • Elmira eventually figured out Skidmore's penalty kill on its sixth power play, when Gorman scored his seventh goal of the season at 12:57 of the third from Jared Smith and Jordan Gonalez. Shawn Kennedy added the empty netter for the 3-1 final.
  • Blaine had 23 saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Kyle Curtain turned back 40 shots for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Skidmore won 41 of 70 faceoffs, with Everett Wardle winning 19 of 23.
  • UP NEXT: The Thoroughbreds head to SUNY Cortland for the rare midweek matinee on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
