Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Skidmore stymied by sharp-shooting Engineers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team was hung up on Friday evening against Rensselaer in a 72-41 loss to the Engineers at home.

  • RPI shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from beyond the arc. And nearly 40 percent overall from the field to take down the Thoroughbreds, who struggled to get hot offensively and shot 26.9 percent as a team.
  • The Engineers even their Liberty League record up at 2-2 and improve to 5-6 overall. Skidmore is 2-8 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.
  • Prince Shyllon and Jake Walsh went for double figures off the bench to lead the Thoroughbreds. Shyllon scored 11 points on a 3-of-5 shooting night from deep. Walsh had 10 points with three rebounds.
  • Jonny Anbazo dropped 20 to lead the Engineers. Avery Eugster scored 14 points, and Dylan Matchett had 12.
  • Skidmore's only lead of the night lasted 1:53 after scoring the game's first four points. Ahead by two, 13-11, in the middle of the first half, RPI rolled off seven in a row as part of an 11-2 run to lead by 11. Skidmore cut it down to six with 4:13 left on five Walsh points on successive trips down the court.
  • The Thoroughbreds were held without a field goal for over 10 minutes as RPI built its lead to as many as 41, before Skidmore scored the game's final 10 points for the 72-41 final. Shyllon had eight of them. Walsh scored the other two.
  • Head coach Joe Burke: "That's flat out just not good enough effort or execution on any level for what the standard is for this program.  It is another learning lesson for us. Coming out of break and off the layoff we have to be more prepared and that falls on me. We have to bounce back tomorrow and play way more spirit and focus."
NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Union College on Saturday at 4 p.m. to close the weekend. The Garnet Chargers dropped an 86-80 decision on the road at Ithaca on Friday.
