Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thoroughbreds come up just short in spirited bout with Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – At one point down 18 points in the first half, the Skidmore College men's basketball team worked its way back to get to within one point in the final minute of regulation, but dropped a tight 53-58 decision against visiting Union College on Saturday.

  • Aidan Roy scored two out of his game high 17 points with 25 seconds remaining to make it a one-point Garnet Charger lead.
  • Into the double bonus, Tanner Tedesco swished both free-throw attempts for Union to make it 61-58.
  • Skidmore had the ball with 17.3 seconds left, down by three, out of a timeout. Roy's two-point attempt rolled off the rim into the hands of Union's Brandon Reid, who came down and hit both of his free throws for the 63-58 final.
  • Roy added seven rebounds in the most productive game of his young career with three assists and three steals.
  • Jake Walsh had 14 points for the Thoroughbreds and added three boards, two rebounds, and a steal.
  • Joey Skoric went for 13 points with 10 rebounds and a block for a double-double.
  • Edward Baptiste led the way for the visitors with 13 points, and Christian Dufort put together a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Garnet Chargers.
  • Union had its largest first-half lead, 32-14, before the Thoroughbreds clawed right back into the game.
  • Skidmore ended the first half by scoring 11 unanswered points over the final 2:37 capped by a Roy buzzer-beating 3-pointer. It was Skidmore's only triple of the first half. The Thoroughbreds went 5-for-5 over the span from the field while blanking the Garnet Chargers on the other end in five straight possessions.
  • Union rebuilt its advantage to 12 by the 7:05 mark of the second half. Skidmore inched its way back until a Shyllon deep bomb with 2:28 remaining made it a three-point affair.
  • Union took advantage of a 28-8 advantage in bench points.
  • The game featured just 11 turnovers: six by Union, five by Skidmore.
  • Both teams locked down second chances. Union scored just two second-chance points while Skidmore had four.
  • Head coach Joe Burke: "I am proud of how we kept fighting tonight. These guys have been dealt a tough hand this year but it will make them better in the long run. That kind of effort though was a better resemblance of what this program stands for. We just need to get back to work.  We will start making shots soon enough. We have to keep attacking in the meantime."
NEXT UP: Skidmore is right back at it on Tuesday at home against Vassar at 7:30 p.m.
