Skidmore splits second day at Springfield; finishes weekend 2-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Skidmore College volleyball team is off to a 2-1 start to the season after splitting its two matches on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds swept Rivier University (25-18, 25-23, 25-17) before falling in five sets (10-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-11) to Keene State.
 
Skidmore 3, Rivier 0
  • The balanced Thoroughbred attack featured six different players with five or more kills.
  • Ella Harris, Jo Blanco, and Jazlin Chen all had six kills.
  • Maya Stolarz, Rudi Reyes, and Madison Manning finished with five kills apiece.
  • Reyes added a match high five blocks. Chen had four to go along with four service aces.
  • Ella Kretten led the way defensively with 11 digs.
  • As a team, Skidmore hit .221 with 38 kills in 86 attempts with 19 errors. Rivier swung at a .075 clip.
  • Noa Berger registered 24 assists and six digs.
 
Keene State 3, Skidmore 2
  • After Skidmore went up two sets to none, Keene State fought back late in the third game to continue the match before pushing it to five.
  • In the fifth set, the Owls came out hot with a 7-1 run after Skidmore got the first point.
  • Keene State led 13-6 before the Thoroughbreds rattled off five points in a row to get to within two. Keene State closed it out by scoring the final two points on a Molly Wetherbee kill followed by a Sarah Bartels service ace.
  • Blanco led Skidmore with 11 kills, four blocks, and 13 digs.
  • Harris added eight more kills with six blocks.
  • Carolyn Scott got in on the action with seven kills.
  • The Thoroughbreds dominated the net with a 14-3 edge in blocks. Chen led the team with seven. Two out of Harris's six blocks were solo stuffs.
  • Manning registered six kills and 12 digs with a pair of assists.
  • Catriona Hoelperl had 19 assists and three kills with two aces.
  • Bartels had 12 kills, five aces, six digs, and 16 assists to lead Keene State.
 
NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Williams College on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
 
  • After the completion of the tournament, Ella Harris was named to the All-Tournament Team.
