SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – WestConn scored eight out of nine goals to start the second half to tie the game at 11, but the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team buckled down and scored the final three goals, two by sophomore
Jimmy Gibbons, to defeat the visiting Wolves 14-11 on Wednesday evening.
- The Thoroughbreds improve to 7-3 on the season with the non-league victory. Western Connecticut drops to 8-3.
- After WestConn scored the tying goal at the 3:39 mark of fourth quarter, Gibbons had the first of his two goals with 10:23 remaining to give Skidmore a 12-11 lead. He popped his second tally 29 seconds later for insurance after Jack Fitzpatrick won one of his 18 faceoffs on the evening. Fitzpatrick finished 18-8 on draws.
- Tim Blue scored his second goal of the evening just passed the midway point of the final period to complete the scoring.
- Brian Gonsalves had three goals and an assist for four points to lead Skidmore.
- Gibbons had an assist to go along with his two goals for three points.
- Jon Bouvier, Caleb Lawson, Gibbons, and Blue all scored twice for the Thoroughbreds.
- Charlie McFadden, Will Fekete, and Andrew Meindl each found the back of the net once.
- Collin Kuester had nine saves in the victory.
- For WestConn, Julian Duque scored three goals. Trey Aronow had two goals and two assists, Tristan McMahon connected for two and one, and Stephen Cicchetti scored twice.
- In addition to a healthy 19-9 advantage on faceoffs, Skidmore finished with a 51-38 edge in ground balls. Fitzpatrick led the way with 14, while Gibbons had six and Gonsalves had five. Bouvier and McFadden finished with four each.
- Skidmore caused 12 of WestConn's 17 turnovers. JJ Jablonowski led the team with two caused turnovers, and 11 different players registered one.
- Skidmore's fast start led to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead was seven, 10-3, at the half before WestConn went on its run to start the third quarter.
- Skidmore improves to 5-0 at home.
