Thoroughbreds earn top seed with 8-1 shutdown of Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Picked by the Liberty League coaches to finish fourth, the Skidmore College men's tennis team finished first in the final league standings with an 8-1 win over Union College Sunday at the Saratoga YMCA. The #34 Thoroughbreds are 10-7 and finished with a 7-1 league record. Union will be seeded fifth with a 7-8 overall and 4-4 league mark.
 
  • Skidmore settled the match early with a doubles sweep. Brendan Jimenez and Nika Mori posted an 8-5 win at number one over Dimitris Binopoulos.
  • The Thoroughbreds then won five of six singles matches. Jimenez was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Ben Jacobs. Sergiu Celebidachi won an exciting three-set match at number two over Binopoulos, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-2.
  • Skidmore has never lost to Union in Liberty League play.
  • The Thoroughbreds have won more UCAA/Liberty League championships than any other program with 15. The last coming in 2021. Skidmore lost to RPI in the 2022 championship match.
  • The six-team Liberty League tournament is April 28-30 at the Cornell University Reis Tennis Center. Skidmore will receive a first round bye and face the winner of RPI-Union in a semifinal on April 29. Hobart gets the other bye and will play the winner of Vassar and St. Lawrence.
