Skidmore drops series finale at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The Skidmore College baseball team completed its weekend trip to Maine with a 7-4 defeat to Bates on Sunday morning.
 
  • Bates is 15-12 after completing the three-game weekend sweep of the Thoroughbreds.
  • Skidmore is 19-12.
  • Senior Jackson Hornung tied the program record with his ninth home run of the year in the seventh inning.
  • Brendan O'Neill was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Trey Bourqie and Zachary Leiderman both recorded two hits in five trips.
  • Max Mello hit an RBI double and scored in the first inning to give Skidmore an immediate 2-0 lead. Mello later walked to reach base for the second time.
  • Bates scored each of the next six runs: two each in the first, third and fourth.
  • After Hornung's opposite-field homer made it 6-3 Bates in the seventh, O'Neill singled to score a run in the eighth to pull the Thoroughbreds to within two. Skidmore went on to advance the tying runs into scoring position, but Bates starter Sam Hough used one of his six strikeouts on the day to get out of it.
  • Hough got the complete-game win for Bates. He allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
  • Bates scored one more insurance tally in the last of the eighth.
  • John Nowak was 2-for-4 for the Bobcats with a two-run homer in the fourth.  
  • Ethan Barnett allowed one earned run over four innings of relief for Skidmore. He surrendered three hits and worked around three hit batsmen but did not issue any walks.
  • As a team, Skidmore out-hit Bates 10-8.
