100th coaching win for Ghilardi; Thoroughbreds dominate second half for win in home finale

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team put the pedal to the metal in the second half on Saturday against RIT, outscoring the Tigers 13-3, to earn the weekend sweep with a 22-11 victory. The win moves Skidmore to 4-5 in the Liberty League, 8-7 overall, and it is the 100th career victory for Skidmore head coach Elizabeth Ghilardi.
 
  • Ghilardi has reached the milestone in her 13th season at the helm of the program. She is the winningest coach in program history, and the first to reach the 100-win plateau.
  • Skidmore and Rochester are tied for seventh, a half-game behind Union, in the Liberty League each with one game to play. Skidmore owns the tiebreaker. The top seven make the tournament.
  • RIT (4-9, 3-6)
  • Gabriella Modesti and Jillian Lockwood both had career days for the Thoroughbreds offensively. Lockwood had five goals and two assists for seven points. She had 13 points over the weekend. Modesti scored six times.
  • Julia Cafasso found the back of the net three times.
  • Skidmore also used two goals and one assist each for Maddy Marr and Lily Schwartzman.
  • Maeve McKinley finished with one goal and one assist.
  • Grace dBenedictis, Amelia Bassett, and Allison Brewer all scored once.
  • Lily Hudner dished out a pair of helpers.
  • Liv Kazanjian made eight saves for her second straight victory in goal for Skidmore. Phoebe Beshlian made two saves in seven minutes of relief.
  • Lara Strunk, Victoria Benanti, and Kazanjian all caused two turnovers. Kazanjian finished with six ground balls, and Strunk had five.
  • Ella Harris had eight draw controls. Sophie Craco had four.
  • Baylee West scored three times to lead the Tigers. Starter Michelle Messenger had nine saves.
  • Both sides traded shots through a majority of the first half. Three straight from Skidmore in the middle of the second quarter gave the Thoroughbreds the lead for good. It was 9-8 Skidmore at the break.
  • Skidmore scored four times in the first 6:18 of the third quarter to set the tone for the dominant final 30 minutes.
  • The Thoroughbreds rode away with the advantage in shots (43-28), shots on goal (34-21), ground balls (25-15), and draw controls (20-16).
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will close the regular season next Saturday, April 29 on the road at Ithaca.
