LEWISTON, Maine - The Skidmore College baseball team was on the short end of a pair of close contests at Bates. The Thoroughbreds dropped the first one, 8-5, before losing in walk-off fashion in game two, 6-5. Skidmore dips to 19-11. Bates is 14-12.
GAME 1 – Bates 8, Skidmore 5
- Bates scored three in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead in the nine-inning opener.
- Jackson Hornung drove in the first two Skidmore runs on separate extra-base hits and scored the third on a passed ball in the seventh to cut into the deficit and make it 6-3. Bates answered with two more in the seventh making it 8-3.
- Back-to-back doubles by Danny Melillo and Hornung in the top of the third gave the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead.
- With one out in the seventh, Hornung tripled to score Brendan O'Neill, who singled to lead off the inning. Hornung finished game one 3-for-5.
- In the ninth, Anthony Petersen, who was also 3-for-5, hit a long two-run home run to right field to bring Skidmore back to within three. The Bates reliever got the next hitter to end the game.
GAME 2 – Bates 6, Skidmore 5 (7 inn.)
- Zachary Leiderman hit a two-out, pinch-hit single in the top of the seventh inning to put Skidmore ahead, 5-4, but Bates came back and scored the tying and winning runs on a bases-loaded single through the left side by Brandon Biggane to walk it off, 6-5.
- Skidmore battled back from a 4-2 deficit with single runs in each of the final three innings.
- Sam Kornet launched a two-out homer in the fifth to make it a one-run game.
- Then, Melillo singled through the middle to score pinch runner Shaw Pedemonti in the sixth to knot it at four. Melillo finished 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases.
- Bates threatened in the sixth after putting runners at second and third with two outs. Grayden Harris induced a ground out to push the tie to the seventh.
- Quinn Hocom struck out seven batters over four innings in the no-decision.
- Melillo hit a ground-rule double to lead off the game and Skidmore had runners at first and third with no outs after Hornung singled. Trey Bourque gave the Thoroughbreds the lead on an RBI ground out, and Max Mello singled to center to make it 2-0. Bates didn't waste any time, tying the game at two in the bottom half of the first.
- The Bobcats plated two more in the third to take the lead on a two-out rally.
