Five Thoroughbred pitchers combine for 1-hit 14-0 shutout

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Jackson Hornung homered for the fourth time in six games and five Skidmore pitchers combined for a 1-hit shutout in a 14-0 win over MCLA Wednesday at Castle Diamond.  The Thoroughbreds are 19-9, while MCLA falls to 8-18.
  • Hornung matched his 2022 long ball total of eight with a two-run shot in the fourth inning that cleared Denton Road beyond the left field fence. He's one off the program season record of nine and reached the eight mark in 64 fewer at bats. The talented senior also had a stolen base and finished with three RBI.
  • Trey Bourque was 1-3 with a full-count two-run homer in the sixth.
  • Starter Zach Dines (2-2) got the win in the prearranged rotation. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before hitting a batter and allowing the only MCLA hit. Then he got out of trouble, getting the cleanup hitter to ground into a double play to end the fourth. He went four innings, walked none and had four strikeouts.
  • Matt Karpousis, Aaron Kats, Ethan Barnett and Anthony Petersen combined for five innings of no-hit ball.
  • Leadoff batter Danny Melillo was 3-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI. Donald Ewen was 1-2 with an RBI single that he stretched into two extra bases on an outfield error. Shaw Pedemonti was 2-2 with an RBI double.
  • Skidmore hits the road for a non-league three-game series at Bates College, starting April 22.
