Thoroughbreds shake up Liberty League with 12-11 OT win over Ithaca

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore Tim Blue ripped in a shot from range at the 1:04 mark of overtime to give the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to a 12-11 win over Ithaca College on Saturday.

  • Skidmore is very much in the playoff picture with two league games to play. The Thoroughbreds are 8-5 and 2-3 in the Liberty League.
  • With the win, Skidmore has secured its first season with at least a .500 record since 2018 (excluding 3-2 2020 shortened season). The Thoroughbreds need just one win in their final three games to clinch a winning season, which would be the first since 2011.
  • The Thoroughbreds are tied with Union and Ithaca (7-4, 2-3 Liberty League) for fourth place in the league. The top five make the playoffs.
  • Skidmore entered the overtime period with a man advantage, thus negating the all-important faceoff. Jon Bouvier's rip was saved by Ithaca's goalie, Ryan LaForty, just as the penalty expired. Skidmore retained possession, but a quick turnover gave the Bombers the ball.
  • Ithaca was unable to clear, as one of Max Heberlein's three ground balls set the Thoroughbreds up in the offensive zone. Blue scored his second of the game and 15th of the season just seconds later.
  • The win is Skidmore's first over Ithaca since the Bombers joined the Liberty League prior to the 2018 season.
  • Charlie McFadden led Skidmore with three goals and an assist. Will Fekete, Brian Gonsalves, and Blue all scored twice. Jon Bouvier had a goal and two assists. The Thoroughbreds also got goals from Jack Doherty and Caleb Lawson.
  • Collin Kuester made 12 saves in the win for Skidmore.
  • The game got to overtime when the Bombers scored three times in the final 4:38 of regulation, including the tying goal with 59 seconds left.
  • Skidmore scored the previous four goals as part of a 6-1 second half run to take the lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored the first goal in all four quarters as well as the winner in overtime. Skidmore had tallies in the first minute in each of the first two periods.
  • Ithaca scored five out of six in the first quarter to lead 5-2 and was ahead 7-5 at the half after a 2-2 second frame.
  • The low scoring third quarter had Skidmore get a pair against just one for the visitors and it was 8-7 Ithaca after three.
  • Three out of Skidmore's four goals to open the fourth quarter were man up.
  • Near the end of regulation, Skidmore brought the ball down the field and called a timeout with 18.4 seconds remaining in regulation. The play didn't result in a goal or shot, but an Ithaca player was sent off for holding with under two seconds on the clock.
  • Charlie Niebuhr and Brady Graham had hat tricks for Ithaca. Ryan LaForty made 16 saves.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will visit Clark to complete its non-league schedule on Wednesday before going to nationally top-ranked RIT next Saturday, April 22.
