Owls edge Thoroughbreds, 18-17, with last-minute goal

 
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Nicole Rinkus scored on a free position with 45.5 seconds remaining in regulation for Westfield State to defeat the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team, 18-17, at Wachenheim Field on Friday evening.
 
  • Maeve McKinley scored for the Thoroughbreds, her third of the game, to tie it at 17 with inside five minutes remaining.
  • Skidmore won the ensuing draw control, but three straight turnovers (two by Skidmore, one by WSU) gave the Owls the ball with just over two minutes remaining.
  • After a successful clear, a Skidmore foul sent Rinkus to the arc with a chance to put the visitors back on top. Her first attempt was unsuccessful, but another Skidmore violation during the play gave her a second chance. Rinkus connected on the redo.
  • Westfield State grabbed the final draw control and was able to run out the clock on the Thoroughbreds.
  • Westfield State was awarded 11 free positions on the game. Owl players scored on seven of them. Skidmore was 2-for-5 from the eight-meter arc.
  • Skidmore dips under .500 for the first time in 2023 at 6-7. Westfield State is 7-5.
  • Five different players scored three goals each for the Thoroughbreds: McKinley, Maddy Marr, Grace deBenedictis, Jillian Lockwood, Elizabeth Walsh.
  • Marr also had an assist for a team-high four points.
  • Gabriella Modesti had a goal and two assists.
  • Lily Schwartzman also scored in the effort for Skidmore.
  • Westfield State had three players (Rinkus, Natalie DeMaio, Emma Cretella) score four goals apiece. Cretella also had two assists to lead the way with six points.
  • Cassidy Harvey and Cassidy Connolly both had three goals and an assist.
  • Liv Kazanjian made five saves in goal for Skidmore in relief of Phoebe Beshlian, who had two saves.
  • Total shots favored Skidmore, 39-30, and the thoroughbreds picked up a tight 24-23 edge in ground balls. Westfield State finished ahead in draw controls, 19-18.
  • Lockwood led Skidmore with six draw controls. McKinley had five. Walsh, Lara Strunk, and Karenna Benanti each caused two turnovers.
  • Marr led the team with five ground balls. Seven other players had at least two.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore, now finished with non-league play, will host Rochester and RIT April 21-22.
