th-ranked Union College came back with six unanswered fourth quarter goals to swat the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team's upset bid, 12-7, on Wednesday at Wachenheim Field
- The Dutchmen, last season's national runner-up, improve to 7-4 on the year and 2-2 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is 7-5 and 1-3 with three league games to go.
- The Thoroughbreds gave it a run and used a 2-0 third quarter, after trailing 6-4 at the half, to knot the game at six entering the final period.
- The Dutchmen showed their teeth in the fourth, with three goals in the first 4:14 of play in the quarter to all but snuff out any hope of an upset. The garnet's leading scorer, Zach Davis, scored three of them. Union scored two man-up goals as part of its six-goal streak.
- Gonsalves matched a career high, accomplished twice already this season, with four goals to lead Skidmore. He also had an assist.
- Collin Kuester turned aside 17 shots between the pipes for the Thoroughbreds. He's stopped 16 or more in four out of his last five games.
- Caleb Lawson, Tim Blue, and Jon Bouvier scored the other goals for Skidmore. Charlie McFadden had an assist.
- In addition to Davis's three, Justin Greene and Hazen Pike both scored twice for the visitors.
- Dan Donahue made eight saves.
- Skidmore came out of the gates swinging, with a pair of goals in the first 2:24 of the contest. Union got the next two over a 35-second span to tie it up. Unfazed, the Thoroughbreds potted two more to take a 4-2 lead. The first period ended, 4-3 for Skidmore, after the Dutchmen scored with 40 seconds left.
- Union then scored all three of the goals in the second quarter to take a two-goal lead into the break.
- Skidmore locked it down in the third period, and seven of Kuester's saves kept the Dutchmen off the board long enough for Skidmore to tie it at six.
- Total shots favored Union, 41-28. The Dutchmen also had an edge in faceoffs, 13-8.
- In the defensive effort for the Thoroughbreds, Paul Heffernan and Charlie Murphy each caused two turnovers. Matthew McFadden and JJ Jablonowski led with five ground balls apiece.
