Thoroughbreds rally past Vassar for 13-10 win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team scored five straight third quarter goals on the way to a 13-10 Liberty League win over Vassar College Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. The Thoroughbreds are 6-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Brewers drop to 7-5 and 0-3.
 
  • Charlie McFadden led the way for Skidmore with three goals and an assist, all in the second half. Jon Bouvier had two goals, two assists and five ground balls. Caleb Lawson, Will Fekete, and Jimmy Gibbons scored two goals each. David Koffler and Charlie Murphy had single goals.
  • JJ Jablonowski had six ground balls and a caused turnover, while Jack Fitzpatrick won 14 of 24 faceoffs and had five ground balls.
  • Riley Olds led Vassar with four goals and an assist.
  • Skidmore found the net first when Murphy scored from Andrew Meindl at 13:16. It was the defender's first goal of the year and second career goal. Vassar scored the next two before Fekete tied it 2-2 from Bouvier at 10:36. The Brewers then scored a pair :31 seconds apart to lead 4-2 after one.
  • Thoroughbred goalie Colin Kuester kept the score close with 11 first quarter saves.
  • Skidmore outscored Vassar 2-1 in the second quarter on goals from Bouvier and Gibbons to trail by one, 5-4 at the break.
  • Vassar made it 6-4 to open the third, but Skidmore fired off five straight goals over the final 7:09 of the third to take the lead for good 9-6. Charlie McFadden started the run with his 27th goal of the season at 7:09 from Bouvier. Lawson put back a ground ball off his original shot to tie it 6-6. McFadden then set-up Fekete at 3:18 to give Skidmore the lead, 7-6. Lawson upped the lead to 8-6 at 1:24 from Brian Gonsalves. Koffler caused a turnover in his own end, then went coast-to-coast for his third goal of the season and a 9-6 lead at 1:24.
  • The Brewers broke the run at 9:42 of the fourth quarter, but Skidmore answered with back-to-back goals from Gibbons and Bouvier for an 11-7 lead with 4:54 left. Olds (three goals) and McFadden (two goals) traded goals over the final 4:46 for the 13-10 final.
  • McFadden's final goal was his 29th of the season and 70th career goal. He's the 14th player in program history to reach the 70 mark.
  • Stats were fairly even. Skidmore had a 55-52 shot advantage, after being outshot 21-8 in the first quarter. The Thoroughbreds won 15 of 27 faceoffs and had a 45-37 ground ball edge.
  • Kuester finished with a career-high 22 saves, with 11 of those coming in the first quarter.
  • Skidmore's six wins surpass the 2022 total of five with seven regular-season games to play.
  • The Thoroughbreds lead the all-time series with Vassar 29-5.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Western Connecticut in a nonleague contest on April 5 at 5 p.m.
