Catholic rebounds against Thoroughbreds 7-4, 15-5

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Skidmore College baseball team lost twice Sunday to #14 Catholic University 7-4, 14-5. The Thoroughbreds (1-2) handed the Cardinals (7-1) their first loss of the season on Saturday.
 
GAME 1
  • Catholic scored six runs in the second to give All-American ace Tucker Alch a generous lead to work with.
  • Skidmore did get four runs (one earned) on three hits, two walks and two hit batters off of Alch, who had nine strikeouts in six innings. Brendan Martin put the game to bed with a scoreless seventh for his second save of the season.
  • Trey Bourque was 2-4 with a run and an RBI double for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Peter Martin tossed 4.1 strong innings of relief. He allowed one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
GAME 2
  • The Cardinals scored 14 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits, including two home runs.
  • Skidmore hit the board first with three runs in the second. Ewen Donald had an RBI double, while Anthony Petersen and Danny Melillo had RBI singles.
  • Catholic's Zach Burton had a grand slam in the third to erase the Thoroughbred lead.
  • Skidmore went back in front with a pair of runs in the fourth. Melillo had another RBI single and Jackson Hornung had sacrifice fly.
  • The Cardinals plated eight runs in the fifth to break the game open.
  • Melillo finished 2-3 with two RBI.
