Thoroughbreds take game one, 9-5, over #14 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Skidmore College baseball team opened its season with a 9-5 win over nationally 14th-ranked Catholic University on the road on Saturday afternoon.

  • Six members of the Skidmore starting lineup had multi-hit performances in their season debuts to give Catholic (5-1) its first loss of the year.
  • The Thoroughbreds wasted no time in taking the lead in the top of the first. Danny Melillo was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and moved to second on a Jackson Hornung single. Two batters later, Max Mello scored one on an opposite-field single. Hornung scored the second run on an overthrown ball when Mello stole second.
  • Catholic recorded a leadoff double followed by three consecutive singles to tie it in the bottom of the second.
  • Skidmore took the lead right back in the third with three runs. The first four hitters, starting with Melillo at the top, had hits. After his leadoff single, Hornung doubled. Then, Trey Bourque had the first of his three RBI on the afternoon with a single to left. Mello backed it up with his second RBI hit in as many at bats. Brendan O'Neill plated Skidmore's fifth run with a run-scoring ground out with one out.
  • After an unearned Catholic run in the third, the Thoroughbreds scored two on a Bourque two-out single in the sixth.
  • Catholic committed three errors leading to a Skidmore run in the eighth to make it 8-3.
  • The Cardinals made it a three-run game in the bottom of the eighth on a Matthew Fisher two-run triple.
  • Sam Kornet led off Skidmore's ninth with a double. He scored on a Zachary Leiderman single through the middle, which completed the scoring.
  • Christian Giresi closed the door in the ninth with clean inning featuring a pair of strikeouts.
  • Ameer Hasan got the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, over 5.2 strong innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.
  • Ethan Caiazza recorded seven outs in relief of Hasan. He allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Hornung reached base four times. He finished 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Bourque was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run. Mello was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
  • NEXT UP: The teams will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
