Thoroughbred comeback just short in 12-9 loss at RPI

TROY, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team lost its Liberty League opener, 12-9 to Rensselaer Saturday afternoon at ECAV Stadium. The Thoroughbreds are 5-3 and 0-1, while the Engineers move to 5-5 and 2-0.
  • Charlie McFadden continued to rip opposing defenses with three goals and an assist to place Skidmore. He has a team-high 26 goals and 13 assists for 39 points in eight games. Six other Thoroughbreds scored one goal each. JJ Jablonowski had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Paul Heffernan added three caused turnovers.
  • Luke Murphy led the Engineers with five goals and two assists.
  • McFadden put Skidmore in front 1-0 at 7:22 of the first quarter. RPI scored off the ensuing face off to tie it. The Engineers then tallied three goals in :12 seconds to open a 4-1 lead.
  • RPI opened the lead to 8-2 at the half and then scored the first goal of the third quarter to lead 9-3.
  • Down 11-5 in the fourth quarter, Skidmore scored four of the next five goals to close the lead to 12-9, but RPI stopped the bleeding and kept the Thoroughbreds off the board over the final 4:59 to preserve the win.
  • RPI had a 52-36 shot and a 43-37 ground ball advantage.
  • Collin Kuester kept the Thoroughbreds in the game with a season-high 16 saves.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Vassar College in Liberty League play on April 1 at 3 p.m.
