Skidmore’s late comeback bid falls short at Kean in opening loss, 16-15

UNION, N.J. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell in its season opener at Kean University Monday afternoon, 16-15. The Thoroughbreds scored a pair of goals in the final minute but ran out of time to complete the comeback.
 
  • Charlie McFadden had four goals an assist for the Thoroughbreds to lead the offensive unit.
  • Jon Bouvier scored three goals, including both Skidmore goals in the final 28 seconds to make it interesting.
  • Brian Gonsalves had two goals and two assists for four points, while Nicolo Mazzocca had two goals and one assist. Gonsalves also had a team high seven ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
  • Jimmy Gibbons, Matt Pinckney, Caleb Lawson, and Tim Blue all scored once.
  • Connor Batjer finished with four goals and two assists to lead the victorious Wildcats, and Nick Thorne posted a three-goal, three-assist performance.
  • Skidmore's only lead of the game was 1-0 when Gonsalves picked up a loose ball and scored his first goal at the 4:27 mark of the contest.
  • There were five tied scores, and Kean's lead did not swell beyond three, when the Thoroughbreds rattled off three consecutive tallies in the fourth quarter to tie it at 13.
  • Kean came back with three of its own to take a 16-13 lead with 3:18 remaining.
  • Shots finished 47-32 for the hosts, but shots on goal were much closer at 28-25. Collin Kuester finished with 12 saves for Skidmore.
  • Both teams were predominantly successful in clearing attempts. Kean was 14-for-15, while Skidmore finished 13-for-14 in the category. The Thoroughbreds finished with a 45-31 advantage in ground balls.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will travel to Cortland on Saturday, Feb. 25 for a 1 p.m. start.
