Thoroughbreds tune-up for postseason, 7-1 at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Skidmore College ice hockey team closed out the regular season with a 7-1 New England Hockey Conference win over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds will take a 15-8-2 overall and 9-7-2 conference record into the playoffs. The Wildcats close out their season 2-22-1 and 1-17.
  • Skidmore will be the fifth seed in the NEHC tournament and travel to Elmira College on Feb. 18 for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal contest.
  • Zach Lindewirth and Matthew Franzoi scored two goals each to lead Skidmore. Connor Wood, Zach Frisk and Mason Beecher had solo tallies. Matthew Monk dished out three assists and Danny Magnuson added two.
  • Blaine Moore completed a successful weekend in goal with 32 saves. He stopped 50 of 52 shots (.961) he faced in a pair of wins.
  • Johnson & Wales scored first at 4:40 of the first period. The Thoroughbreds rattled off seven straight after that, starting with an unassisted by Frisk at 11:18. A JW major penalty resulted in three Skidmore power-play goals to close the period. Wood at 16:33, then Lindewirth at 17:18 and Beecher at 19:19.
  • Franzoi's first collegiate goal was the lone score in the second period. He registered goal number two at the 2:46 mark of the third period, less than two minutes after Lindewirth's second goal at :52.
  • The win completes the season sweep of the Wildcats. Skidmore leads the all-time series 8-0-1.
