Skidmore pulls out all the stops, topples Elmira in OT in NEHC Quarterfinal

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Senior captain Matthew Monk tied it with a blast from the blue line with three seconds remaining in regulation and Kaeden Patrick won it in overtime as the Skidmore College men's hockey team shocked host Elmira in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Quarterfinal, 4-3.
 
  • Skidmore marches on to face the league's top seed and nationally second-ranked Hobart next Saturday, Feb. 25 in a semifinal rematch from 2022.
  • Patrick's winner came at the 13:54 mark of the overtime period. Linemates Everett Wardle and Connor Wood had the assists.
  • Skidmore finally broke through in the extra session after carrying play with a 5-2 shot advantage and heavy offensive pressure to that point.
  • Play was tied at two apiece when Nicholas Domitrovic put Elmira on the precipice of victory with a go-ahead highlight reel goal with 3:50 remaining in regulation.
  • Skidmore came out of a timeout with six attackers and six seconds remaining in its season. Wardle, who finished with three assists, won back the faceoff back to Devon Mussio, who delivered a D-to-D pass to Monk as he wound up and drove in the equalizer from the point.
  • Elmira scored three unanswered goals after Skidmore built a 2-0 lead with a pair of tallies in the first period.
  • The Thoroughbreds struck first just 30 seconds into the game on a Will Dow-Kenny one-timer from Wardle.
  • Then, just after an Elmira penalty expired, Thomas Finck connected on a shorthanded goal with assists from Jaden York and Mussio at the 13-minute mark.
  • The eventful first period came to a close without any more scoring, but Skidmore killed a a short 5-on-3 chance for Elmira as part of a five-minute major penalty. Tate Brandon made 10 saves during the 5:34 span. He finished the game with 37.
  • Chance Gorman scored a shorthanded goal of his own for Elmira to get on the board just under a minute into the second period.
  • The Soaring Eagles tied it at two on a Christian Abrams goal with 46 seconds left in the middle frame.
  • Despite giving up the two goals in the second period, Skidmore outshot Elmira 21-8. Shots finished 49-40 Skidmore.
  • Both teams came up empty in five power-play chances.
  • NEXT UP: With a start time to be announced, Skidmore will travel to Hobart for the NEHC Semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 25.
