Thoroughbreds take out Beacons in OT, 2-1

BOSTON, Mass.—Nick Cozzi scored at 2:01 of overtime and Blaine Moore had 28 saves to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 2-1 New England Hockey Conference win over UMASS Boston Friday evening. The Thoroughbreds are 14-8-2 overall and 8-7-2 (1-1) in league play. UMB is 11-13 and 8-9 (0-2).
  • With 2:59 left in the sudden death period off the faceoff Devon Mussio fed Thomas Finck before Cozzi ripped a wrist shot by Sam Best for the game-winning goal and the 2-1 victory.
  • The Beacons had the lone goal in the first two periods. Kolye Bankauskas scored at 19:!8 of the first period from Michael Krupinski. Matthew Monk scored the equalizer at 5:18 of the third from Everett Wardle.
  • Skidmore kept the pressure up for the rest of regulation, with 13 shots on goal over the final 14:42 of regulation.
  • Moore had 28 saves, including 12 in the second period and one in overtime.
  • The win gives the Thoroughbreds the season sweep and of the Beacons. Skidmore won 4-3 on Jan. 7 in Saratoga Springs. Skidmore is 3-0-1 against UMB over the last four games.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds close out the regular season at Johnson & Wales College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Skidmore has an outside chance to finish fourth, but would need to win in regulation and help in the form of a Babson loss in regulation. The Thoroughbreds own the tiebreaker over both Babson and UMASS Boston. The NEHC Quarterfinals are Feb. 17 at the top four seeds.
