#13 Skidmore rolls Southern Maine 5-1; extends unbeaten start to 10

GORHAM, Maine – The nationally 13th-ranked Skidmore College men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to begin the season to 10 with a 5-1 road win at Southern Maine on Friday evening.
 
  • Skidmore (8-0-2, 4-0-1 NEHC) is one of just three teams remaining in Division III (#1 Plattsburgh, #5 St. Scholastica) without a loss and is one of just nine across all of college hockey, men and women, that is still undefeated.
  • The Thoroughbreds used two goals and an assist from sophomore Ryan Waltman, as well as a goal and an assist from junior defenseman Danny Magnuson to skate by the host Huskies.
  • Juniors Ethan Heidepriem and Zach Lindewirth also scored for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Senior goalie Tate Brandon had 23 saves, including 14 in the third period, to backstop the Thoroughbreds in his eighth win of the campaign. Brandon is in the top-five nationally in goals-against average (1.12) and save percentage (.957) while allowing one goal or fewer in six out of his last seven starts.
  • Skidmore built a beefy 4-0 lead through two periods. The hosts got on the board in the third period on the power play, and Skidmore closed it out with a power-play goal of ther own for the 5-1 final.
  • Heidepriem got it going early for Skidmore at the 2:55 mark from Everett Wardle and Kaeden Patrick. Wardle finished the game with two assists and went 13-4 in the faceoff circle.
  • Waltman sent Skidmore into the dressing room with a 2-0 lead with his first at 7:27 from Magnuson and Jaden York.
  • Waltman got his second at the 7:07 mark of the middle period to make it 3-0. Will Dow-Kenny and Zach Frisk had the helpers.
  • Lindewirth made it 4-0, from Stephen Perez and Waltman, with 2:13 left in the second stanza.
  • After Nolan McElhaney broke the shutout for USM at the 6:04 mark of the third, Magnuson's power-play tally at the mid-way point of the period closed out the scoring.
  • Skidmore scored once in two power play opportunities. Southern Maine was 1-for-3.
  • Kyle Penton made 30 saves for the hosts as shots finished 35-24 Skidmore.
NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds will look to extend their record-setting unbeaten streak on Saturday when it completes the road trip at Babson at 4 p.m.
