Skidmore stays unbeaten with 7-3 win over Johnson & Wales

ATTLEBORO, Mass.—Kaden Patrick scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 7-3 win over Johnson & Wales in New England Hockey Conference competition Saturday evening. The Thoroughbreds are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in NEHC play, while the Wildcats are 0-3 and 0-2.
  • Skidmore opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of late first period goals. Everett Wardle found the back of the net from Danny Magnuson and Patrick at 15:18. Kevin Urquhart extended the lead to 2-0 from Jack Strauss and Magnuson at 17:52.
  • Johnson & Wales opened the second period with Brendan Doyle scoring the first of his three goals only :30 into the stanza. Owen Gonter replied with his first goal as a Thoroughbred at 11:21 from Jacob Zwirecki and Oscar Worob. Patrick upped the lead to 4-1 two minutes later. Gonter and Stephen Perez had the helpers. Sam Saccone closed out the period at 17:37 from Ryan Waltman for a 5-1 lead.
  • Doyle cut it to 5-2 at 3:25, but Waltman got it back at 9:29 from Zach Frisk and Worob. Patrick made it 7-2 at 11:51 from Will Dow-Kenny and Wardle. Doyle's third goal at 13:43 accounted for the 7-3 final.
  • Skidmore fired 55 shots on goal, while the Wildcats had 29. Tate Brandon had 26 saves to improve to 3-0.
  • The Thoroughbreds allowed their first power-play goal of the season in the third period. Opponents are 2-11 (.182) after three games.
  • The 3-0 start is the team's best since opening 3-0-1 in 2019.
  • With the opening NEHC weekend complete, Skidmore and Hobart are tied for first at 2-0 with six points each.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds are home for weekend pair of non-conference games against Albertus Magnus on Friday at 7 p.m. and SUNY Canton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
