Thoroughbreds dull Beacons 7-3

BOSTON, Mass.—The Skidmore College hockey team opened New England Hockey Conference play with a 7-3 road win over UMASS Boston Friday night. The Thoroughbreds are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Beacons are 0-2-1 and 0-1.
  • After killing off three penalties, the Thoroughbreds took a 1-0 lead deep into the first period on a Kaeden Patrick goal from Freddie Ilias and Ethan Heidepriem at 19:10.
  • Skidmore broke it open with second period goals from Heidepriem (0:47), Will Dow-Kenny (5:28), Patrick (8:05) and Jacob Zwirecki (12:56). Despite a Beacon goal at 2:44, the Thoroughbreds led 5-1 at the second break.
  • UMB scored a pair of goals in a :51 span early in the third period to cut the margin to 5-3, but Skidmore responded with goals :21 seconds apart by Zach Frisk (15:54) and Jaden York (16:16) to secure the win.
  • The Thoroughbreds poured 48 shots on goal to 40 for the Beacons. Tate Brandon stopped 37 shots for his second win of the season.
  • Skidmore is unbeaten in its last five games against UMB and leads the series with a 19-18-5 record.
  • The Thoroughbreds killed all four UMB power plays and are a perfect 8 for 8 in kills through two games.
  • Only two games into the 2023-24 season and Skidmore is one of two NEHC teams left with a perfect record.
  • The Thoroughbreds continue NEHC play Saturday at 4 p.m. at Johnson & Wales University.
