BOSTON, Mass.— Freshmen
Charlie Fantom and
Nick Padilla combined for 41 points, but it wasn't enough as the Skidmore College men's basketball team lost 77-69 to Emmanuel College on the second day of the Emmanuel Tip-Off Tournament. The Thoroughbreds are 1-3, while the Saints move to 3-2.
Â
* Fantom scored 22 points and Padilla came off the bench to add 19 points.
* Donte Pope led the Saints with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
* Up 26-23, Emmanuel outscored Skidmore 18-8 over the final six minutes of the first half lead 44-31 at the break.
* Skidmore fought back in the second half. Down 67-48 with 7:07 to play, the Thoroughbreds used a 21-2 run to move to within four, 69-65 with 1:11 to play. Aiden Roy had a big three pointer,
Joey Skoric had back-to-back baskets and Padilla had an old-fashion three-point play.
* The Saints responded by going 8-10 from the free throw line over the final minute to preserve the win.
* Coach
Joe Burke: "Every game we play with this group there will be so many lessons learned. This was our first back to back and we were not ready to go. That being said we fault like heck to get back in the game and did an unbelievable job in the second half.  Unfortunately, it just wasn't enough to beat a good team on their home court.
"The weekend was the experience we were looking for, it wasn't the results, but I'm super pumped about this group and I mean that honestly.  I know they'll keep fighting and I know they're going to get better every game they play together."
* Next up: The Thoroughbreds host Hartwick Monday night at 7 p.m.
