Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thoroughbreds block Hartwick comeback bid, 67-59

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team survived a second half Hartwick push for a 67-59 victory over the visiting Hawks on Monday evening.

  • Skidmore led by as many as 21 points late in the first half, but Hartwick fought on and pulled to within six, 57-51, with 4:14 left in the second act.
  • A corner 3-pointer from Dillon McCafferty settled things down for the Thoroughbreds and he came down the next trip and laid in a fastbreak layup off the glass to recoup the double-digit lead. His triple was the only made 3-ball by either team in the second half.
  • McCafferty was one of three Skidmore players to score nine points. Joey Skoric and Jack LaGarde were the other two. On the other end of the floor, Skoric stuffed eight shots, four in each half. Eight blocks ties a program single-game record set twice by Al Barker in the 1982-83 season. Skoric also had a game high 12 rebounds.
  • LaGarde had three blocks and 10 rebounds as Skidmore finished with a 13-4 edge in blocked shots.
  • Charlie Fantom led the Thoroughbreds in scoring with 20 points. Fourteen of them were in the first half, where he was 5-of-8 from the field.
  • After a hot start offensively, Skidmore struggled as a team in the shooting department over the final 24 minutes of the contest.
  • Aidan Roy and Nick Padilla supplemented the Skidmore offense with eight and seven points, respectively. Roy added five assists, three steals, and five rebounds. Padilla had three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • Skidmore finished with a decisive 25-2 edge in fast-break points. Points in the paint, however, was 36-32 Hartwick, and the Hawks finished with a 23-11 edge in second-chance points.
  • Hartwick only led once, at 5-2, when Daniel Oyediran drained a 3-pointer. Oyediran led all players with 23 points for the Hawks.
  • Coach Joe Burke: " I'm proud of the guys, we came out of locker room and did all the things we talked about for the first 20 minutes. We played with great energy, and built a big lead. There were a lot of positives. Hartwick made adjustments at the half and I thought we showed some fatigue playing our fourth game in six days but credit them for continuing to play hard. Ultimately we made enough winning plays to get the job done. Great win and another great learning experience as we continue to grow as a group."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will kick off Liberty League play when it hosts Clarkson and St. Lawrence Dec. 1-2.
