Thoroughbreds tripped up by Vassar, 4-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team suffered a 4-2 Liberty League defeat at home against Vassar College on Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park.
 
  • Skidmore is 6-7 and 2-3 in the Liberty League with four games, including two in the conference, remaining. Skidmore is one game behind William Smith, Rochester, and Union all tied for third. The top-five teams make the postseason.
  • Vassar is tied for first place at 4-1 in the league and improves to 9-4 overall.
  • Tobi Dolan played a hand in both Skidmore goals with one goal and one assist. Both came off corners.
  • CC Wetter scored her 10th goal of the season at the 2:14 mark of the second quarter to cut the Thoroughbred deficit in half.
  • Vassar struck in the middle of the first quarter with two goals separated by 1:27.
  • Hailey Brigger and Juliana Ishimine had the goals. Katie Hieb assisted on the second.
  • The second quarter was played scoreless. Vassar had the lone shot on goal.
  • The Thoroughbreds continued to press after Wetter's goal to open the third stanza. Penalty corners in the period were 6-0 Skidmore and 9-1 overall in the second half. Total penalty corners for the game finished at 10-5.
  • Molly Zahnleuter scored on a shot from the top of the arc through traffic to make it 3-1 Vassar with 9:55 remaining. Jaclyn Narleski assisted.
  • The guests picked up a 4-1 lead with 3:36 remaining on a rebound. Sydney Kovel was credited with the tally.
  • Dolan tipped in Brooke Golden's shot off Dolan's corner insert for Skidmore's second goal with 2:32 remaining.
  • The Thoroughbreds got one more corner opportunity and managed three shot attempts in the process.
  • Overall shots were 16-11 Vassar. The Brewers finished with a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • In split action, Sarah Dumaresq picked up the win with one save in the first half for Vassar.
  • Victoria Bodnar had six saves for Skidmore.
  • Throughout the day, Skidmore College Field Hockey raised money through its annual SCFH vs. Cancer event to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will host Russell Sage College on Wednesday before a Friday showdown at home against William Smith College on Friday. The conference portion of the schedule closes next Sunday at the University of Rochester.
