Thoroughbreds shrug off Bard challenge on Senior Day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team picked up a four-set win (25-11, 20-25, 25-15, 26-24) over visiting Bard College on Saturday afternoon on the day Skidmore celebrated its five seniors. The Thoroughbreds later dropped their match against Ramapo (25-22, 25-21, 25-15) to close the tri-match and home schedule.

  • Skidmore finishes the day 8-12 overall and improve to 2-4 in the Liberty League. With two conference matches remaining, the Thoroughbreds are in striking distance of earning a playoff berth.

Skidmore 3, Bard 1
  • Bard was one point away from forcing a deciding fifth set when Skidmore brushed off a pair of set points on the way to scoring four in a row to close it out with a 26-24 win in the fourth. Senior Ella Harris led the way with two kills and a block assist. Classmate Jo Blanco closed it out with a service ace.
  • Moments earlier, Bard usurped Skidmore's two-point lead, 22-20, with four points in a row aided by three Skidmore errors to get to set point.
  • Following a dominant opening set for Skidmore, which saw the Thoroughbreds hit .400 as a squad, Bard tied it up in the second game. The Raptors took an early lead and after Skidmore made a push to tie it at eight, Bard held the lead the rest of the way.
  • Skidmore bounced back in set three and made just three attacking errors for a .276 team swing percentage. The Thoroughbreds got into position to go up 2-1 thanks to a 9-2 mid-set run.
  • The fourth set featured more tied scores (eight) and lead changes (five) than the previous three sets combined.
  • Maya Stolarz posted an even dozen kills to lead Skidmore. She committed two errors for a .370 hitting percentage for the match. Stolarz also added three block assists.
  • Blanco finished with nine kills with three aces and a team high 12 digs.
  • Harris registered eight kills and four blocks, with one solo block.
  • Sophomore Jazlin Chen led all players in the match with five blocks. Two of them were solo blocks.
  • Junior Tiffany Flores registered 25 assists and senior Noa Berger had 15. Berger also paced Skidmore with four service aces. Ella Kretten and Blanco had three each.
  • Right behind Blanco in digs was Athena Braverman, who had 11.
  • Ryan Lum had 16 kills for Bard to lead all players.

Ramapo 3, Skidmore 0
  • The first two sets were neck-and-neck down to the wire before the now 14-1 Roadrunners were able to pull off the wins.
  • In the opener, Skidmore scored four unanswered points to pull to within one at 23-22. Ramapo snagged the game by scoring the next two on a Desiree Cruz Kill and a Skidmore attack error.
  • Bard led in the second stanza by as many as nine points before Skidmore inched its way back into it. A late six-point Ramapo lead shrunk to two, 22-20. The teams traded points before a service error, one of seven on the match for Skidmore, set up set point for the visitors, and they cashed in immediately to go up 2-0.
  • Ramapo then scored the first eight points of the third set and withstood a Thoroughbred push to pick up the sweep.
  • For Skidmore, Harris and Stolarz shared the team lead with eight kills apiece. Senior Carolyn Scott had five kills.
  • Harris also had Skidmore's lone solo block. Stolarz and Chen had two block assists apiece.
