Skidmore takes down Union, 74-67, for weekend sweep

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball squad completed its weekend road sweep on Saturday with a 74-67 win over Union on Saturday afternoon.

  • Four different players reached double figures in scoring for the Thoroughbreds. Tautvydas Kupstas scored 20 points for the second time this weekend and 13th time this season to lead the way.
  • The Skidmore win avenges a 74-61 defeat at the hands of the Dutchmen on Jan. 6.
  • In a wide-open Liberty League, the Thoroughbreds improve to 8-4. The top-six teams are all within 1.5 games of each other. Skidmore is 10-9 overall. Union falls to 3-16 on the year and 2-10 in the league.
  • Greg Skoric, one day after setting the program's career rebounding record, registered a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also added four blocks and a pair of steals.
  • Jake Walsh drained 5-of-6 field-goal attempts, including a 3-of-4 mark from beyond the arc, to finish with 16 points off the bench.
  • Riley Greene added 12 points and pitched in three assists, a block, and a steal.
  • Mark Engel had four assists and a game-high three steals.
  • Edward Baptise was Union's leading scorer with 18 points and six rebounds.
  • After Skidmore led thorough the duration of the first half, and the first part of the second period, Union gathered its first lead, 46-45, with 11:16 left in regulation.
  • Kupstas answered promptly with a 3-pointer, but Union rattled off the next six points to lead by four.
  • Skoric cut the deficit to two before Walsh connected from deep to give the Thoroughbreds the lead back for good with 7:50 to play.
  • Brian Noone converted a three-point play for the Dutchmen to make it a three-point game with 1:07 left.
  • Kupstas grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in the put-back try to get Skidmore's lead back up to five the 39 seconds left.
  • The Thoroughbreds went 4-of-5 at the free-throw line, combined with a Harrison Eichelberger block and an Engel steal, to close it out.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "Proud of the guys for making enough plays at the end to get this done. We weren't great tonight but we are finding ways in these close games. It was back and forth and credit Union, they are really well coached and played hard. We were fortunate to get the W. We made some progress this weekend but are not there yet. This  was a tough road trip, any time you can do anytime you can win  back to back games on the road you have to feel good."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will conclude its road slate next weekend at Rensselaer and Ithaca.
