Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skidmore falls 4-3 to Castleton in overtime

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Castleton scored the tying goal with under two minutes left and potted the winning tally with less than one second remaining in overtime to defeat the Skidmore College men's hockey team, 4-3, on Tuesday evening.

  • Skidmore picks up a point in the league as its record goes to 5-4-1 for 18 points. The Thoroughbreds are 11-5-2 overall. Castleton improves to 3-8 (8 points) in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) and 5-13 overall.
  • Andrew Stefura scored the winner for the Spartans on a breakaway after Zach Papapetros made a center-ice interception and sent Stefura off alone.
  • Stefura also scored the tying goal for Castleton with 1:54 remaining in the third period on a 6-on-4 power play and the Spartan net empty.
  • Connor Wood, Zach Frisk, and Everett Wardle accounted for the Skidmore goals.
  • Seven different Thoroughbreds had assists: Danny Magnuson, Ryan Waltman, Zach Lindewirth, Sam Saccone, Nick Cozzi, Matthew Monk.
  • Castleton scored early to start the first and third periods, both on deflections. Bryce Irwin scored on a tip to put the visitors up 1-0 just 38 seconds elapsed into the contest. Then, Zach Trempner got Castleton's second goal on another redirection 17 seconds into the third period to tie things up after the Thoroughbreds built a 2-1 lead.
  • Wood got Skidmore on the board at 7:37 of the first period on a wrist shot through traffic on the power play after waiting for the lane to clear. Magnuson and Waltman assisted.
  • Skidmore took the lead at 7:02 of the middle period, the only scoring of the second stanza, on a Frisk rush after he accepted a Lindewirth pass in the neutral zone. Saccone also assisted.
  • Then, 10:42 remaining in regulation, Wardle lifted a rebound under the bar to give Skidmore the lead back. Cozzi sent in the initial shot, and Monk carried the puck into the zone for the secondary helper.
  • Earlier in the third period, Skidmore was called for covering the puck in the goalie's crease allowing for a Castleton penalty shot. Reigning NEHC Goaltender of the Week Tate Brandon made the leg save on Stefura.
  • The save was one of 29 for Brandon on the evening. His counterpart Brandon Collett turned aside 50 shots for the visitors, as shots finished 53-33 for Skidmore.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will travel this weekend to Southern Maine and Babson Jan. 27-28 before a rematch with Castleton next Tuesday, Jan. 31, on the road.
