Skidmore battles #5 Norwich to 1-1 tie

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team picked up a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) point with a 1-1 tie against nationally fifth-ranked Norwich on Friday.

  • Skidmore moves to 10-4-2 and 4-3-2 in the NEHC for 14 points. Norwich is 13-4-2 (9-1-2, 28 pts. NEHC).
  • It is the second consecutive game and third of four between the teams in Saratoga to end in a tie.
  • Skidmore is 2-2-2 against USCHO top-10 ranked teams.
  • After Norwich took the lead early in the second period on the power play, the Thoroughbreds scored the tying tally at 8:56 of the middle period for the only scoring in the contest.
  • Everett Wardle scored his fifth of the year for Skidmore. Kaeden Patrick and Connor Wood assisted.
  • Wardle scored on the rush and slipped his shot through the legs of Norwich goalie Andrew Albano after getting a drop pass from Patrick.
  • Patrick O'Neal scored on a rebound to put the Cadets up at 2:22 of the second period. After a Skidmore faceoff win, the clearance attempt around the board was stopped by Joe Nagle at the blue line, whose initial shot was stopped by Thoroughbreds netminder Tate Brandon.
  • Brandon finished with 35 saves, including seven in the five-minute overtime period alone.
  • Albano stopped 30 shots for Norwich.
  • Skidmore owned the third period's two best scoring chances. After a mad scramble in front with around 90 seconds remaining in regulation, Jacob Franczak's wrist shot drilled the cross bar but fell in front of the goal line.
  • Earlier, Patrick was stoned by Albano with the glove from point-blank range.
  • In the overtime period, Skidmore was whistled for a holding minor 1:13 into the period. Brandon made three saves and the three-man penalty kill unit squashed the Norwich attempt.
  • Danny Magnuson worked a breakaway while Skidmore played shorthanded but was unable to get a clean shot away.
  • The Thoroughbreds came up empty in three power play attempts. Norwich went 1-for-5.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will host New England College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
