Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thoroughbreds deploy late heroics again to beat Hobart, 69-66

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Riley Greene hit a mid-range jump shot with 1.8 seconds remaining to break the tie and send the Skidmore College men's basketball team to a 69-66 victory over Hobart on Tuesday.

  • It is the second consecutive game that the Thoroughbreds won with a game-winning basket within the final 10 seconds.
  • Skidmore improves its league stock to 4-2 and is now 6-7 overall. Hobart dips to 2-4 in the Liberty League and 6-7 overall.
  • The Thoroughbreds got the ball back with 11 seconds remaining after Hobart's Jackson Meshanic made a pair of free throws to knot it up at 66.
  • Greene carried the ball from Skidmore's back court to the right side and drilled the step-back jumper to put the Thoroughbreds back on top.
  • Mark Engel stole Hobart's in-bound pass and was quickly fouled. He made 1-of-2 free throws with 0.3 seconds left. The Statesmen were unable to get a full-court heave off in time after grabbing the rebound.
  • Greene scored a season-high 22 points with seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Tautvydas Kupstas led all players with 27 points. He shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from beyond the arc.
  • Jackson Meshanic registered a team-high 25 points for Hobart with 12 rebounds.
  • Skidmore led for a majority of the first half until a Patrick Walker 3-bomb for Hobart gave the Statesmen a 21-19 lead with just under seven minutes remaining. Back-to-back triples from Jake Walsh and Kupstas sent the Thoroughbreds into the break ahead by four.
  • Skidmore led by 13 with 5:21 left, but Hobart closed the gap quickly by making four consecutive shots and Carter Meshanic converted a three-point play with 2:04 left to trim Skidmore's lead down to three.
  • Hobart closed to within one on a Jackson Meshanic layup with 1:22 left. Greene made a free throw with 23 seconds left giving way to Jackson Meshanic's tying free throws.
  • Hobart struggled for most of the night from the line, shooting 53.8 percent (14-of-26) as a unit. Skidmore connected at 70.6 percent (12-of-17).
  • Coach Joe Burke: "Just another great battle between two programs that have had many during my time here. We weren't great tonight, but we were good enough. Most importantly, I thought we competed hard for 40 minutes. When this team is locked in on both ends and playing as hard as they can, they are capable of beating anyone. This group needs to develop that consistency if we want to keep the momentum we now have."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will hit the road for games at Vassar (Jan. 13) and Bard (Jan. 14).
