Kupstas joins 1,000 point club; Thoroughbreds edge Brewers in OT

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Tautvydas Kupstas became the 19th player in program history to score 1,000 career points as the Skidmore College men's basketball team upended defending league champion Vassar, 78-77, in overtime on Friday.

  • Kupstas needed six points to reach the milestone and drained a 3-pointer with 10:45 remaining in the first half to accomplish the feat. Kupstas finished with a game-high 23 points on 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) shooting from deep.
  • Skidmore came out of the gate fast in the overtime period, scoring six quick points as part of an 8-2 run to lead 78-72 with 3:05 left. Vassar ended on a 5-0 spurt, and a would-be winning basket came after time expired to give the Thoroughbreds the win.
  • Skidmore improves to 7-7 and 5-2 in the Liberty League. Vassar is 8-6 and 4-3.
  • Riley Greene scored 15 points for Skidmore to go along with five steals, five assists, and two blocks.
  • Harrison Eichelberger scored 11 points, and Alexei Downie had 10.
  • Greg Skoric pulled down 14 rebounds and finished with nine points.
  • Avni Mustafaj led Vassar with 19 points and six assists. Zach Johnson had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The contest featured 16 ties and 17 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points.
  • The teams traded jabs throughout the first half and a 7-2 Thoroughbred run to close the period put them up by four at the break.
  • The seesaw match continued in the second half. Skoric unleashed a dunk with 1:50 left to tie it at 70. The Thoroughbreds and Brewers shot a combined 0-for-6 the rest of regulation trying to win it.
  • Coach Joe Burke: "'That was a heck of a college basketball game between two really good teams from start to finish. Proud of our guys for persevering again. We are getting better, getting healthier, playing harder and have started defending at the level we need to. We need to keep moving in a positive direction today. Congrats to Kup on 1,000 points. I have been fortunate to coach a lot of great players and Kup is certainly in that group. 1,000 in a little over two years of playing is a direct result of how committed he is to this. He is extremely humble and one of the hardest working kids I have ever coached in my career."
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will go for its fourth straight league win Saturday at Bard at 4 p.m.
