Thoroughbreds advance to championship match with 5-3 win over Hobart

ITHACA, N.Y.—For the sixth time in seven years Skidmore and #22 Rensselaer will play for the Liberty League men's tennis championship. The Thoroughbreds edged Hobart 5-3 in the semifinals to earn the right to defend its title. Skidmore is 8-10, while the Statesmen end their season at 16-7.
  • John Rado had the clincher at number three singles. He won a third-set tiebreaker over Sean Pesin, 8-6. Pesin fought off two match points to pull even at 6-6, but Rado won the next two points to win 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (8).
  • Skidmore led 2-1 after doubles and 4-1 after singles wins by Sergiu Celebidachi (6-3, 6-4) at number two and Brendan Jimenez (6-2, 6-1) at number four. The Statesmen came back with wins at number five and six and led at number one before Rado ended the match.
  • Skidmore is 5-1 against RPI in championship matches, including a 5-0 win in the 2021 championship match. Skidmore has won 15 Liberty League/UCAA titles since the league began competition in 1995-96.
  • RPI defeated Skidmore 5-4 on April 9 as the Engineers won two of three doubles matches (by 8-6 scores at first and third doubles) and the teams split the six singles matches. The second and fifth singles matches both went three sets with RPI (Van Cotthem) winning at second singles and Skidmore (Tristan Thiebaut) winning at fifth singles.
