RPI holds off furious Skidmore comeback for Liberty Championship

ITHACA , N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's tennis team heroically battled back, but fell short in a 5-3 loss to RPI in the Liberty League Championship match played at Cornell University. It was one of the closest Liberty League finals ever with four singles matches going to a third set and two of three doubles matches decided in tiebreakers. The Thoroughbreds end the season at 8-11, while the Engineers advance to the NCAA Tournament with a 15-2 record.
  • Skidmore scratched out a 2-1 lead after doubles with two tiebreaker wins. Zachary Portnoy and Brendan Jimenez won the final four points of the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (7-5) win at number two doubles over Max Safanov and Igor Visnevskij at number two. Andrew Koessler and Connor Biernat won a 7-4 tiebreaker at number three for antother 8-7 win.
  • The Engineers took a 4-2 lead in singles with wins at 1, 3 and 6.
  • The Thoroughbreds fought back with Tristan Thiebaut's 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (1) win at number five singles, cutting the lead to 4-3.
  • Both of the reaming matches were in the third set, when Sergiu Celebidachi lost a tough three-setter (3-6, 7-5, 3-6) at number two to Emilio Van Cotthem to decide the match.
