Thoroughbreds salvage third game at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team picked up an 8-7 comeback victory in game three on the road at St. Lawrence on Sunday.

  • Skidmore finishes the regular season 23-10-2, 11-6 in the Liberty League, and 9-3 in the East Division.
  • It is the most regular season wins for the Thoroughbreds since 2012.
  • Top-seeded Skidmore will host Clarkson, the four seed from the West, in a best-of-three series next weekend.
  • St. Lawrence finishes 3-9 in the West to narrowly miss a spot in the crossovers. The Saints are 17-15 overall, 7-11 in the Liberty League, and will close next weekend in a consolation series against Vassar.
  • Tied at six apiece in the ninth, Skidmore loaded the bases with no outs. The fourth consecutive single of the inning from Max Mello gave the Thoroughbreds the lead. Danny Melillo hit a sacrifice fly to score the eventual winning run.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Christian Giresi allowed one, but stranded the tying run at third and the winning run at second with a swinging strikeout to end it. It is Giresi's fourth save of the year.
  • An inning earlier, Skidmore scored twice to knot it up at six. Jackson Hornung hit a leadoff triple and scored one batter later on a Trey Bourque single through the left side. Sean Lang later worked a bases-loaded walk. St. Lawrence stranded the bases loaded with one out to keep it tied.
  • Another bases-loaded walk to Mello kicked off a three-run third for Skidmore. Melillo bounced into a fielder's choice to score another one before Bourque came across on a passed ball.
  • St. Lawrence, after getting one in the second, put up five in the fifth highlighted by a Andrew Circelli three-run home run. It was Circelli's third homer of the weekend and league-leading 11th of the season.
  • Skidmore's top three in the order – Brendan O'Neill, Hornung, Borque – combined to go 11-for-15 (.733) and accounted for all eight runs. The trio reached base a combined 14 times.
  • Hornung finished 4-for-5 with a triple and three runs. He completes the regular season as the league leader in hitting (.465), runs (54), hits (66), extra-base hits (26), RBI (46), total bases (110), slugging (.775) and on-base percentage (.544).
  • Bourque was also 4-for-5. He drove in two and scored three.
  • O'Neill finished 3-for-5 with a walk. He crossed the plate three times.
  • Mello and Melillo each drove in a pair.
  • Ethan Barnett picked up the win in relief. He pitched 2.0 innings of shutout ball and surrendered just a two-out single in the eighth. He struck out two.
