Thoroughbreds drop league pair

CANTON, N.Y.—The North Country trip got off to a rocky start when the Skidmore College baseball team lost 15-5 and 18-8 St. Lawrence University on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds will wrap the set and the regular season on Sunday at 12 p.m.  Skidmore (22-0-2, 10-6 Liberty League) already clinched first place in the Liberty League East and will host a playoff crossover series May 7-8. The Saints are 17-14 and 7-10 in conference play and need a win over Skidmore Sunday and a Clarkson loss to make the tournament.
 
GAME 1
  • Skidmore went in front 3-1 on a Danny Mello home run and RBI single. SLU scored four in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh to take control.
  • Jackson Hornung was 3-4 with two runs. Andy Pelc had a two-run homer in the ninth. William Snyder was 2-3 with a triple.
  • The Thoroughbreds tied a season-high with five errors.
  • Starter Ameer Hasan (6-1) lost for the first time this season, he went five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits. He walked one and had three strikeouts. 
GAME 2
  • The Thoroughbreds took another early lead, 6-2 with five runs in the second inning. Hornung had a two-run double, followed by a Trey Bourque two-run home run.
  • The Saints scored four in their half of the inning and four more in the third. An eight-run sixth inning sealed the win.
  • Sean Lang had a solo home run in the sixth.
  • Hornung finished 3-4 with two RBI. Mello was 2-4 with two RBI and O'Neill was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Starter Jack Clark (6-1) lost for the first time this season.
