Thoroughbreds thunder back to earn 10-10 draw with Sage

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team scored once in the seventh and four in the eighth to erase a five-run deficit in a 10-10 tie with visiting Russell Sage College on Wednesday. The game was ruled a tie after nine complete innings and darkness approaching.

  • Brendan O'Neill had four hits, scored twice, stole a pair of bags, and drove in two.
  • Jackson Hornung went 3-for-4 with three RBI, three stolen bases, two runs, and two walks. He also had a double, one of two Thoroughbred extra-base hits.
  • Owen Fitzhugh doubled and walked and finished 2-for-5.
  • Shaw Pedemonti had three hits and a walk in six trips. He also scored two runs.
  • Skidmore (22-8-2) stole eight bases including three double steals.
  • In the final four innings, Ethan Barnett and Christian Giresi tossed 2.0 shutout innings apiece. Barnett gave up two hits and had three strikeouts. Giresi walked a batter, did not surrender a hit, and struck out three.
  • For Sage (11-23-1), Andrew Knapp was 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the third. He also scored twice.
  • Sage scored five in the top of the first with three bases-loaded walks, a passed ball, and a Dillon Maxon RBI single.
  • Skidmore got two back right away. The top three hitters in the order (O'Neill, Hornung, Trey Bourque) singled scoring one, and Hornung came in with two outs on a wild pitch.
  • The Thoroughbreds cut it to one in the second. Hornung hit a two-out double and scored on Bourque's second RBI single in as many innings.
  • Knapp's double bumped Sage's lead back up to four, and it was five in the fifth when the Gators crossed one more.
  • Sam Kornet walked, one of four free basses for the Skidmore first basemen, to lead off the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Thoroughbreds loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Skidmore got one on a Cameron Pedemonti RBI ground out. O'Neill hit a single to right to plate two more and move the tying run to third. Hornung ripped a line drive to third to score the tying run.
  • Giresi worked a quick 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth.
  • Kornet walked for the fourth time with one out in the bottom half of the inning and pinch runner Danny Melillo promptly stole second base. Shaw Pedemonti hit an infield single to move Melillo to third and with two outs, Sage reliever Colby Phelps induced a ground out to escape trouble.
