Hornung hits two bombs to lead Thoroughbreds to 9-3 win over Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team won its eighth straight Liberty League game, 9-3 over Vassar College Friday evening at Castle Diamond. The Thoroughbreds are 19-3-1 overall, 8-1 in Liberty League play and 7-0 in Liberty League Division competition. The Brewers are 10-14, 2-7 and 1-3.  The teams conclude the series with a pair Saturday at Vassar.

  • Jackson Hornung continues to be one of the top hitters in NCAA III. He took the first pitch he faced and drilled a line drive shot that traveled onto Denton Road to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead in the first. The Brewers pitched around him for a pair of walks in his next two at bats. In the sixth, he took a 3-1 fastball deep over the left center fence for his sixth home run of the season and two more RBI. He was intentionally walked in his final at bat. He reached base all five appearances, going 2-2 with four runs and three RBI. He raised his batting average to .484, while extending his consecutive reached base streak to a program record 30 games and his hit streak to 12 games.
  • Brendan O'Neill was 3-5 with three RBI. Danny Melillo was 2-5 with two runs and Jaden Torrado went 1-4 with an RBI single and an RBI hit by pitch.
  • Jack Clark remained unbeaten on the mound, bumping his record to 6-0. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking eight and striking out four.
