Late inning heroics give Thoroughbreds split with Ithaca College

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team opened Liberty League play with a well earned split with Ithaca College. Ithaca won the first game 5-3 in 11 innings, while the Thoroughbreds bounced back to take game two 3-2.  Skidmore is 12-2 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play. The Bombers are 11-4 and 1-1.

GAME 1
  • It was a battle of aces with Skidmore's Jack Clark and Ithaca's Kyle Lambert showing why they are among the league's best.
  • Clark went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Lambert went 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out nine.
  • Ithaca scratched out a pair of runs off Clark in the fourth inning. Those were the first earned runs of the season the Thoroughbred ace has allowed.
  • The Bombers got one more in the eighth to lead 3-0. Skidmore responded in the bottom of the eighth when Jackson Hornung drilled a first-pitch two out home run to left field to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • Skidmore tied it in the bottom of the ninth. Max Mello reached first when he was hit on a full count pitch. Shaw Pedemonti came in to pinch run and later scored on William Snyder's two-out single to send the game to extra innings.
  • The Bombers scored twice in the 11th to win 5-3.
  • Christian Giresi took the loss in relief.

GAME 2
  • The nightcap turned into another pitcher's duel. This time Skidmore's Ameer Hasan and Justin Posnik combined for the win.
  • After four scoreless innings, Ithaca broke through with single runs in the fifth and sixth.
  • Ithaca could have done more damage in the sixth, but Thoroughbred right fielder Owen Fitzhugh ran 20 yards then made an all-out diving catch to end the inning.
  • Fitzhugh then led off the bottom of the sixth with a first pitch home run to left center to get Skidmore on the board.
  • The Thoroughbreds tied it in the seventh. With two outs, William Snyder doubled into the left center gap. Fitzhugh singled to center to plate Snyder and tie the game 2-2.
  • Skidmore took the lead in the eight when Melillo led off with a double then scored on a Trey Bourque double.
  • Posnik shut Ithaca down 1-2-3 with two strikeouts and a pop up in the ninth to secure the win. He four innings, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Hasan started, going five innings with one run on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
