Skidmore’s unbeaten start interrupted by #6 Eastern Connecticut

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team lost for the first time this season after winning its first seven games. The Thoroughbreds fell to nationally sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State, 11-6.
 
  • Eastern scored five runs in the bottom of the second. It came after Skidmore scored three in the top half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Jaden Torrado was 3-for-3 with a home run and a triple for Skidmore (7-1). He finished a double short of the cycle. He drove in two runs and scored twice. He also walked to reach safely in all four trips to the plate.
  • Danny Melillo went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
  • William Snyder was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in.
  • Warrior leadoff hitter Zach Donahue reached base four times and scored three runs. He finished 1-for-3 with a double and walked three times.
  • John Mesagno drove in three runs for Eastern Connecticut State (6-0) without the strength of a hit. He had two RBI ground outs and walked with the bases loaded. ECSU also scored in the sixth when Mesagno bounced into a double play (no RBI).
  • Two batters after Snyder singled to right field to tie it at one in the second, Melillo delivered a two-run single to score a pair and give Skidmore a two-run lead.
  • Eastern scored its five runs in the second on just two hits. There were four walks and one hit batter.
  • Torrado hit a solo blast in the fourth to right field in the fourth to make it 7-4 Eastern.
  • The Thoroughbreds got two in the sixth to get back to within three. Snyder singled and scored on Torrado's triple. Torrado scored on batter later on a Melillo double.
  • The Warriors closed the scoring in the bottom half of the sixth with two more to re-gain their five-run cushion.
  • Ethan Caiazza, Anthony Peterson, and Shaw Pedemonti combined to go three scoreless innings out of the Skidmore bullpen.
  • Eastern's first relief pitcher, Griffin Pontbriant, was credited with the win. He tossed 3.2 innings and gave up three runs and nine hits. Bryan Albee and Tommy Benincaso teamed up to allow one hit with five strikouets over the final 3.2 innings.
  • After a day off tomorrow, Skidmore will continue play on Thursday, March 17 against Defiance with an early 9 a.m. first pitch of the doubleheader.
