Thoroughbreds survive late rally; beat Wisconsin-Stout 13-12

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team withstood a six-run ninth inning from Wisconsin-Stout and sneaked away with a 13-12 victory Monday afternoon.
 
  • Skidmore remains unbeaten and improves to 7-0.
  • Danny Melillo went 4-for-5 with a walk, three runs scored, and one RBI.
  • Jackson Hornung, Max Mello, and Brendan O'Neill all finished 3-for-5. O'Neill drove in three, while Hornung had two RBI and Mello posted one. Hornung also doubled twice.
  • William Snyder was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Trey Bourque went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
  •  Ameer Hasan earned the win for the Thoroughbreds. He surrendered four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts over five innings. He did not walk a batter.
  • Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Skidmore plated four runs to take the lead.
  • Stout answered with one in the fifth to pull to within one, 5-4.
  • The Thoroughbreds added on three in the sixth.
  • In the top of the seventh, Joel Thimsel delivered a two-run double for the Blue Devils to cut into Skidmore's lead, 8-6.
  • Skidmore added five runs of insurance in the bottom of the eighth, which turned out to be the difference in the game. Melillo singled to lead off and moved to second on a Bourque single. Mello drove in one with a double, and O'Neill slashed a two-run double two batters later. Anthony Mollica brought in Skidmore's 12th run with a sacrifice fly, and the 13th and deciding run came across on an infield error.
  • A walk and two hit batsmen loaded the bases to start the Stout ninth. A strikeout and another hit batter loaded the bases with two outs for Colin Hagerman, who hit a two-run single to make it 13-9.
  • Charlie Szykowny delivered the big blow, a three-run home run to pull Wisconsin-Stout all the way back to within one, 13-12.
  • Mello induced a ground out to third to end it.
  • Skidmore will play nationally sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State tomorrow – Tuesday, March 15 – at 11 a.m.
