Game Recap: Baseball |

Skidmore pushes unbeaten start to six with sweep to open trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jack Clark dazzled on the mound in game one and Jackson Hornung played hero in game two for the Skidmore College baseball team in a sweep (8-0, 4-3) over Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday.

Clark tossed a seven-inning complete game two-hitter in the opener. He walked just one and struck out five. Hornung plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh of game two as the Thoroughbreds won in walk-off fashion. He had three RBI in the game and scored the other Skidmore run.

GAME 1
  • Trey Bourque went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored. Hornung had two hits and one driven in, while Max Mello posted two hits in five trips with one RBI.
  • Skidmore went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first on a Bourque run-scoring double and an RBI single from Anthony Mollica.
  • The Thoroughbreds added two more in the second with RBI singles from Hornung and Bourque.
  • A four-run sixth inning featured runs on a wild pitch, an infield error, a ground ball, and a Sean Lang sacrifice fly.
  • Clark retired the first nine hitters he saw before the leadoff man, Ryan Dominick, singled to start the fourth. Wisconsin Lutheran's only other hit was a one-out single in the fifth. The Warriors did not get a base runner past second base all game.

GAME 2
  • Hornung's bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh won it for the Thoroughbreds. He also brought in two on a tripe in the third. He came around one batter later on a Bourque sacrifice fly.
  • Tied at three, pinch hitter William Snyder worked a leadoff walk. Anthony Petersen was hit by a pitch to put the winning run in scoring position. Owen Fitzhugh singled to load the bases with nobody out. WLC got an out at home with the infield drawn in before Hornung ended it.
  • The Warriors struck first on starter Peter Martin on a Foster Engelhardt two-run single in the first. Martin went four innings in the no-decision. He surrendered three runs on seven hits. He didn't walk a batter (hit two batsmen) and struck out five.
  • After Skidmore took a 3-2 lead in the third, Wisconsin Lutheran answered with one in the fourth on a Josh Enevold single.
  • Christian Giresi picked up the win, his second of the year, in relief. He allowed two hits over three innings with three strikeouts and no free passes.
  • Tyler Danko was the tough-luck loser. He allowed just two hits in six-plus innings of work with six punch outs.

Skidmore will play the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a single game tomorrow (Monday) at 12 p.m.
