Power play propels Skidmore to 4-3 win over #2 Geneseo

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team scored all four of its goals on the power play to upset nationally second-ranked Geneseo on Saturday night, 4-3.
 
  • Four different players scored for the Thoroughbreds in the momentous non-conference win.
  • Devon Mussio led the way with a goal and two assists.
  • Kaeden Patrick, Ryan Waltman, and Zach Lindewirth all scored for Skidmore (4-1).
  • Everett Wardle and Zach Frisk both contributed two assists. Danny Magnuson had one.
  • Skidmore blocked 16 shots, led by senior captain Matthew Monk with four, including two in the closing seconds of the contest to help the Thoroughbreds hang on.
  • Tate Brandon had 36 saves to improve to 2-1 between the pipes in the young season.
  • Stefan Miklakos opened the scoring at 12:13 of the first period from Alex Wilkins to put the Knights ahead.
  • Skidmore answered with 2:43 remaining in the opening period. Patrick directed in a pass from Wardle to the front of the cage.
  • Then, Skidmore took the lead with just under a minute remaining in the opening frame. Mussio knocked down a clearance attempt and played it over to Frisk and got it back for a shot through traffic from the point.
  • Geneseo tied it at two 55 seconds into the middle period. Justin Cmunt scored the goal off a Peter Morgan rebound.  
  • Waltman gave Skidmore the lead back at 14:28 with Wardle and Mussio assists.
  • Then, at 4:04 of the third period, Geneseo tied it again when Cooper Fensterstock took advantage of a Skidmore turnover.
  • Lindewirth got the game winner just shy of the midway point of the third. Frisk and Mussio assisted after Jacob Franczak won a clean faceoff back and Skidmore moved the puck promptly at the point before Lindewirth scored from in tight.
  • Geneseo was whistled down for interference with 20 seconds remaining. The Knights won the ensuing faceoff and Morgan was able to get off two shot attempts as time ran out, but Monk blocked them both.
  • Skidmore was dominant in the faceoff circle for most of the night, winning 36-of-58 (62.1%) draws. Franczak was 10-3 and Wardle went 15-6.
  • Geneseo finished 0-for-5 on the power play.
  • In his first start of the year, Geneseo goalie Adam Harris had 24 saves.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will begin New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play on the road next weekend at New England College and Norwich.
