Skidmore overpowers New England in NEHC opener, 7-4

HENNIKER, N.H.—The Skidmore College hockey team won its New England Hockey Conference opener 7-4 over New England College Friday night. The Thoroughbreds have won five straight to move to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Pilgrims are 1-3 and 1-2.
  • Kaeden Patrick led Skidmore with two goals. Ethan Heidepriem had a goal and two assists. Devon Mussio had three assists. Zach Frisk (1-0-1), Zach Lindewirth (1-0-1), Matthew Monk (1-1-2), Everett Wardle (1-0-1), Connor Wood (0-2-2), Ryan Waltman (0-1-1) and Danny Magnuson (0-2) all hit the score sheet.
  • Lindewirth and Monk put the Thoroughbreds up 2-0 in the first, but NEC tied it with goals :46 apart to tie it 2-2 at the break.
  • The Pilgrims struck first at 1:10 of the second for their lone lead of the game 3-2. Skidmore scored the next three to go back in front, 5-3. Patrick scored a power-play goal at 3:33. Frisk tallied a power-play goal at 8:03 and Patrick scored his second of the game at 14:33. NEC got one back at 15:07 to cut it to 5-4 after two periods.
  • Heidepriem's short-handed goal from Monk and Magnuson at 2:14 of the third gave Skidmore breathing room and Wardle iced it with an empty net power-play goal at 17:32.
  • The Thoroughbreds were 4-4 on the power play, while NEC was 0-6.
  • Skidmore outshot the Pilgrims 43-30. Tate Brandon improved to 3-1 with 26 saves.
  • The seven goals are the most Skidmore has scored on NEC since an 8-6 win in 2010.
  • NEXT UP: The road trip continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against #10 Norwich University.
