Thoroughbreds down Rivier 5-3 to advance to championship game vs. #6 Oswego

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College hockey team will play for its third straight Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational championship at 4 p.m. Sunday after a 5-3 win over Rivier University (4-4-1) Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. The Thoroughbreds (7-2-1) will face #6 Oswego (7-1) a 5-1 winner over Wilkes University (2-6-1).
  • Five different players scored for the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore, ranked ninth nationally in power-play percentage, went 2-4 on Saturday.
  • The Thoroughbreds took advantage of a Rivier penalty 10 seconds into the game. Connor Wood scored his first career goal from Ryan Waltman and Everett Wardle at :38 for a 1-0 lead. Waltman made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 15:16 from Wardle and Danny Magnuson. The Raiders snuck one in at the end of the period when Avery Arnold tallied his team-high fifth of the season at 19:17.
  • Tyler Duderstadt tied it for Rivier with a power-play goal at 4:05 of the second. Zach Lindewirth put the Thoroughbreds back in front at 19:49 from Matthew Monk and Zach Frisk.
  • Jaden York extended the lead to 4-2 at 4:28 of the third from Will Dow-Kenny. Kurt Watson cut it to 4-3 at 8:50, but Kaeden Patrick hit the empty net at 19:04 for the 5-3 final.
  • Blaine Moore remained unbeaten at 3-0 with 20 saves. Luke Newell stopped 29 shots for Rivier.
  • In the second game, Oswego was hit with a rare protocol penalty to start the game, but Shane Bull scored the Lakers' first short-handed goal of the year at 1:15 in front for good. Alex DiCarlo had two goals and Ryan Dickinson and Noah Bull each scored for Oswego. Matt Carlson scored the lone Wilkes goal. Nieto Garrett had 33 saves for Wilkes, while Cal Schell stopped 34 shots for the Lakers.
  • This will be Skidmore's sixth straight championship appearance and 10th in the tournament's 16-year history. The Thoroughbreds beat Conn College 1-0 last season and Tufts University 4-2 in 2019.
