Skidmore holds off New Paltz for win in opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team opened the regular season with a 76-72 win over New Paltz on home court Friday night.
 
  • Four players scored in double figures for the Thoroughbreds, led by Tautvydas Kupstas, who dropped 29 points on 8-of-20 (40 percent) shooting and 10-of-12 at the free-throw line. He scored 20 of his points in the second half.
  • Greg Skoric posted a double-double. He had 16 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Riley Greene and Harrison Eichelberger both scored 11. Greene also had six assists and a pair of steals.
  • Ryan Blondo posted 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals for the Hawks.
  • New Paltz scored 34 points off the bench, led by Brandon Scott with 12.
  • The Hawks had its largest lead of the game at seven after Solomon Neuhaus made 1-of-3 free throws with 4:36 remaining.
  • Skidmore came back with a 7-0 run to bring it even. Teams traded 3-balls before Skoric laid one in for a Thoroughbred two-point lead at the half.
  • New Paltz briefly led in the second half, but the turning point came on a Skoric dunk off a Greene feed just passed the five-minute mark to ignite the crowd.
  • Blondo scored on the Hawks' next possession to take the lead back, but Greene hit on the way back to give Skidmore the lead for good.
  • The Thoroughbred advantage grew to 11, 64-53, with 5:57 remaining.
  • New Paltz chipped away at it until RJ Meyers-Turner stole the ball from Kupstas with 18 seconds remaining and hit a 3-pointer to make it a five-point game. Kupstas then made a free throw and New Paltz scored in the final seconds to close it out.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will travel to Hartwick on Tuesday, Nov. 15 before opening Liberty League play on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Hobart.
